How IT Professionals Offering Web Design & Search Engine Optimisation Services (SEO) can Improve their Business Model

03/04/25 by Mr Shane Currie | Charles Sturt Student

In todays quick article, I discuss how IT professionals who offer web design and (SEO) services can improve their business model. As an IT professional, I have been in business for a number of years and during these years I have received multiple marketing emails from professionals who claim that they can improve my websites listing in search engines or fix errors on my website. To date, I have sent all these marketing emails directly to the junk email folder of my inbox, here is why.

While I do respect entrepreneurship in the IT sector, if you are an IT professional who does not have your own website, or your own email domain name then I will not be interested in your services. Furthermore, if your website is a page on a social media platform, that requires me to sign up to a social media platform, then I will not be interested in your services. If you are a true IT professional, especially if you are offering webdesign and SEO services then I will expect you to at least have your own website and your own email domain.

Furthermore, if you are plaining on doing business in Australia, I expect you to have a registered business name, an ABN and insurance. I expect you to have a privacy policy. If you think, I am going to hand over the access codes to my server, to an unregistered individual, who can be located anywhere on the planet then you are dreaming.

Important Legal Requirement:The Australian Spam Act 2003 specifies that your company must have consent to send the recipient commercial emails, the company sending commercial emails must also clearly identify themselves and must contain an unsubscribe option. If you are sending unsolicited emails, that do not contain a unsubscribe option then you are in violation of the Australian Spam Act 2003.

To summarize, I receive multiple unsolicited marketing emails a week offering SEO services or to fix alleged bugs on my website. However, these emails mostly come from public email domains and do not include a secure link to a website where I can view an example of their work. These emails also do not contain a registered business name. So, all these emails are sent directly to the trash folder of my inbox. To me, these emails feel like scams, they are unsolicited, unprofessional and I do not trust them.

I support entrepreneurship, in particular Australian entrepreneurship. If you are an IT professional in Australia, and you wish to start your own business in web design and search engine optimisation then I expect you to have at least the following: A website, A registered business name, an ABN, your own domain, insurance, a privacy policy, an Australian contact number and examples of your own work.
